Wandering with a constantly doodling friend from the excellently odd and intriguing Mika Rottenberg exhibition through to James Gillray 's still high impact art, and a lady approached me to ask when the Gallery closed. There was a staff member wearing uniform with NOTTINGHAM CONTEMPORARY writ large upon it only a few meters from her. Seems you can take the attendant from the gallery, but not the gallery from the attendant.
Seriously, if you can get to Notts contemp before the first of July these two exhibitions are stellar. Aside from howling with laughter at the video of a man sneezing rabbits from his nose, we were also engaged, amused, perturbed, provoked and entertained. The side by side of modern video installations looking at the role of women in work, and 18th century political and social satirical cartoons may seem odd, but both artists use the grotesque and elements of the surreal to create their characters and their surrounding worlds as parallels to current situations and issues.
Hmm, talking like that may have made the lady assume I worked there, sounds like gallery speak!
(excuse the scrappy art and dialogue, both pen problems and lack of editing software to hand on my lunchbreak!)
