If a historic or heritage venue, heck, any venue, says they have smoking policies, please do obey them. Odds are it isn't purely draconian, but is, for example, to protect vulnerable items, or prevent sensitive alarm equipment going off and you all having to go and stand outside while the food goes cold and the fizzy goes flat. Also, it doesn't matter who you are, what you paid for, or who you know, if you've been told, you’ve been told. Security don't muck about.

We get this kind of behaviour usually from the people who you would think care the most, because they are the biggest donors. But it then seems those particular people donate to feel special and brag, rather than to reallly make a difference. So many times with food and drink stubbornly taken in places they really shouldn't be.

So sorry to hear you have to manage this kind of entitlement, it's especially tough trying to balance preservation, appropriate intervention, and maintaining good forward relationships.

Well, unless they're donors, the right answer for "Do you know how much I paid?" would be "Not enough to let you bypass the safety regulations".
